Health Information for Returning Travellers – Ebola Virus Disease

With regard to the current Ebola virus disease epidemic in some areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, Italian health authorities have activated preventive surveillance measures to protect public health.

It is important to emphasize that the risk to the general population in Italy is very low. The risk of contracting the disease is particularly high in close contact with sick and symptomatic people or their bodily fluids.

The exclusive purpose of the measures adopted is to identify potential cases early and prevent their spread promptly and effectively.

Since you are coming from one of the countries affected by the epidemic, certain precautions are being deployed.

This letter aims to provide you with all the necessary information and directions. 

Why these measures?

The fact that you are receiving this information does not mean you are ill, as they rather serve to prevent any possible risks and allow for a timely and safe response if need be. Your cooperation is essential to protect everyone’s health.

We invite you to carefully abide by these instructions with peace of mind and a sense of responsibility. If you have any doubt, please contact the Department of Prevention at the contact details set out in the following information sheet. 

Signs and symptoms of Ebola virus disease

Symptoms may appear up to 21 days after exposure. The main signs are:

  • fever (≥ 37.5–38°C)
  • severe fatigue
  • headache
  • muscle and joint pain
  • sore throat

The following may also appear:

  • nausea, vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • abdominal pain
  • in more severe cases: bleeding

Self-monitoring procedures

During the 21 days following your return, you are required to:

measure your body temperature twice a day (morning and evening), preferably using a digital thermometer
check for the appearance of any symptoms

  • record the values ​​(if possible).

What to do if you experience symptoms

If even one of the abovementioned symptoms appears:

  • Self-isolate immediately at home
  • Contact the Department of Prevention immediately at 331 1739251
  • NB! Do NOT go on your own to the emergency room, outpatient clinics, or doctors’ rooms

Home Self-Isolation Procedures

If you experience symptoms, please contact the Department of Prevention, which will intervene to make a diagnosis if need be; in the meantime, you must self-isolate at home at once in a suitable room with the following characteristics: 

  • Single, separate room
  • Lockable door
  • No access to other people in the room 
  • Good ventilation (openable window)
  • Preferably with a dedicated bathroom
  • If the bathroom is shared, it must be used separately, cleaning and disinfecting after each use
  • Availability of soap or hydroalcoholic solution
  • Disposable tissues
  • Waste and collection containers using two bags, one inside the other 
  • Limit furniture, unnecessary objects, and surfaces that are difficult to sanitise

Mandatory notification of travel

During the observation period (21 days), in the absence of symptoms, any travel outside the province of Trento or changes of residence must be communicated in advance by email to dprevenzione_rientriestero@asuit.tn.it.
